It works for me only if I define the field in SQL as a text. If I use a varchar(256+) it only
returns the first 255.

I am not quit sure what you are refering to as a bug?
MS SQL server is able to return any char length if needed.
I am frequently using MS SQL sever to return formated pages with 2000 chars width.

You can call it a bug, but it is caused by limitations in DBLib, provided by Microsoft. This library
has not been updated since SQL Server 6.0 !
Iøm working on a solution to use FreeTDS on Win32. Until I have a working solution, you can avoid
using (var)char columns greater than 256.
