Gonzalo Vera:
The built-in ODBC functions in PHP work like the other PHP extensions. If
you don't use them, they won't be used. You don't have to remove ODBC
support from PHP.
Regarding Access and PHP: it is better to use COM to access the Access
database, although I've never tried to access an old Access 95 database and
I wouldn't. You should install MDAC 2.6 on your machine (Download from
Microsoft) to enable the new OLEDB Provider (Jet4.0) for Access. Then you
can access the Access database using OLEDB which is more reliable, and
allows you to do connectionless recordsets, as you should with Access
databases, due to their slow performance.
MySQL has much improved performance, however, you may find it difficult to
get it to work under Windows. It is possible to access MySQL using OLEDB as
well. (Refer to a Wrox manual called "Data Access".)
Use PHP's MySQL functions if they work...
Note: do not use pconnect in your ODBC or MySQL function calls, if you are
running IIS. Pconnect will cause IIS to crash fatally (ODBC is not isolated
from IIS). If you run Apache (single-threaded server), you may be able to
use pconnect.
Hope this helps rather than confuses you.
- Jason.
