problem with mail() function

does anyone have expertise with the mail() function or know of a good tutorial? i can see it trying to talk to my mail server (mdaemon) but the mail server says that the sender has no rights to send. the documentation on mail() is spartan to put it mildly as far as i can see.
i am running win2k with omnihttpd which mercifully preinstalls php.
