There is a patch available for the current PHP 4.3 CVS:

http://www.php.net/~sas/patch-lexer-no-stdio

This patch makes PHP use POSIX IO which alleviates the Solaris stdio
issue.

Please let me know whether it works for you.

For those having problems getting SFIO working on Solaris, 
this worked for me (Solaris 8 SPARC)... 
 
LIBS="-L/path/to/sfio/lib -lstdio-mt -lsfio-mt" 
./configure.... 
 
SFIO is binary compatible with stdio, so you don't need to 
include any SFIO headers. Also, be sure to compile SFIO as 
a multithreaded library.

For PHP 4.3.x, you must link using the SFIO stdio replacement from
AT&T.

PHP 5 does not have this dependency itself, although some third party
libraries that use stdio may get bitten by the limit of 256 files; in
which case you should also link against the SFIO library.

You are right. At this time the only way to fix this is by using the
CGI-mode with the NSAPI plugin from my website.

We have been having these problems also.
I just installed php-4.3.2RC1.tar.gz to see if it helps,
and the site started failing again within a half hour.
I doubt that it's an open file limit in libc,
because the site had only 14 hits on .php URLs
before it started failing.   Also, only two scripts were called, and
they don't open any files.  Here's the code
in the most complicated of the two scripts:

The quick fix (have nothing to do with PHP4 itself):

Status of this bug keeps "Critical" because it have to be solved,
because CGI mode of PHP is a lot slower than NSAPI mode.
