The only reason we don't have a new versioning scheme, is that you
refuse to let go of the old one. Guess what? The old one doesn't work
well anymore due to the sheer size of the php4 code-base.
The 4.1.2 release was done with speed and agility, due to the simple
fact that the 4.1 branch was a known quantity. To me that demonstrated
that Jani's new versioning scheme was successful.
The new versioning scheme is a good idea at the right time. You should
give better arguments than "the old scheme has (always worked|worked
before)".
