We're planning to implement a series of eConmerce solutions using PHP with a db backend. Initially our thoughts were to use MySQL as this is what we have (successfully) used before for other (non eCommerce) projects. Are there advantages to using other DB systems (extra features etc.)? I haven't found MySQL's lack of transactions to make ecomm impossible.[Cool MySQL propaganda and useful code snipped]
If I had to pick a feature that clients have asked for that MySQL doesn't do yet, it would be replication. I'm not convinced that RAID doesn't address the problem sufficiently, though.Have you tried anything interesting with MySQL's update log ability? I've been meaning to try some approach where the output log from one server would be piped through mysql to another for live replication; doing this simultaneously in both directions would require some sort of loop control program in the middle (perhaps as simple as adding an identifying comment on the end of each statement).
