This problem appears only, if you build in the checked out
tree.
The rule says that Makefile depends on ../config.status.
This relative path causes a problem, because the php
directory is not always the parent directory of the libzend
directory (i.e. when you symlink libzend to be ../libzend).
The temporary work around is to compile in a separate working
directory. I.e.
$ cd php4
# if you have data left in the tree from earlier builds:
$ make -f build.mk cvsclean all
$ mkdir builddir
$ cd builddir
$ ../configure <...>
$ make
I'm currently looking into reenabling people to have
libzend/TSRM/php4 in the same directory.
