one of the things i believe that has made PHP so popular is that it has
grown to meet the needs of its userbase with each new version.
i was wondering if any of the developers have seriously begun to think
(or even plan!) what the next major revision of PHP will look like.
i think as a syntax, there aren't too many more things that will ever make
their way into the language - most of the core team have expressed their
disapproval of adding things in with too little thought (rightly so).
so where is PHP headed?
to date, PHP's "customers" have had to either file feature requests, wait
until someone who was competent enough had an itch they had to scratch, or
try and do it themselves. maybe it would be a good idea to pre-empt them
and show them that the PHP team really cares what they think.
a questionnaire and then a poll could be used to gauge their
satisfaction and what they would most like in the next (major) version.
the questionnaire could be pretty open ended, ie. "what would you most
like to see in PHP [4.1|5]?". the poll could have the top ten
things that were requested, with each user being able to pick five of
them. at the end, the developers would have an excellent idea of where
people *really* want to see PHP going.
just a suggestion 8^),
