I don't know what you mean by "better system", but getting jade,
docbook, and the modular stylesheets up and running should be even
easier than Sashcha's steps (symlinks and magic env variables? oh
my!).
If I ever get this stuff up and running again from that raw
components, I'll make sure to document the steps.
(For what it's worth, since FreeBSD uses DocBook for their
documentation, it may be the case that you just need to install
the appropriate ports to get it to the work. There's a link
to a FreeBSD page off the main DocBook site.)
