Maybe one thing to note:
I used alternative syntax too, (in some code I still use today there are
pieces full of alternative syntax), but I quitted using it because it was
vague (but that wasn't going to be discussed now), and, more important, it
was deprecated, well, at least I read so. Most likely on php-dev or
phpdoc/php-notes.
And only then I decided to change the docs, to refect that, as I _thought_
it was common opinion. So I did not decide to deprecate it on my own, I just
noted was I thought was correct.
