The gimp libraries are one option. I haven't looked into them either,
but the gut feeling I have is that something that's sluggish as a
interactive desktop application will be even more so when ran in an
environment with dozens of client requests a second. I hope I'm wrong
-- gimp seems to be sweet feature-wise.
