As far as simplicity goes, we're talking about simplicity for the developer. Bundling features does make things simpler for the majority of the target audience.
Compiling modules by default which are buggy just compounds the problem.I obviously agree with that. I do want to see mbstring become an integrated part of PHP, but not a moment sooner than when it is stable. Zeev
