I believe the intention is to remove all mention of PHP 4 from the manual
proper, to an appendix or other standalone document. A quick survey of
twitter showed that lots of folks would like this approach (I didn’t see
any opposition to the idea, but twitter is a big, scary place and I’m sure
someone, somewhere would).

Outside of versions.xml files, we have ~661 (grep | wc -l) mentions of “PHP
4” which are mostly changelogs and “xyz has been bundled since PHP 4.x.y".
That said, we do still have things like XSLT lying around.

It looks like there’s still some (much smaller than it was previously) way
to go.

I’d like to see this thread arrive at a clear action too, whatever that
might be.

I’d say so, yes.

P.S. I’m still a little bit on the fence here, pending clarification of
what we actually want to do and/or achieve. Personally, I like seeing a
function version info like “(PHP 4, PHP 5)” – emphasising our BC
friendliness – and a full history in the changelogs. I’d rather not give
the impression that 70% (random number pulled from the air) of our
functions were brand new to PHP 5.0.0. Then again, who cares if they were
in PHP 4?…
Cheers,
