After reading about Zend Studio on this list I decided to give it a spin
for the first time last night. Of course, YMMV.
A majority of my coding is done on a Windows box with a Linux/Apache/PHP
web server running on another machine. My current editor of choice is
EditPlus. My experience ranges across Visual Studio 6 and 7, EditPlus,
UltraEdit, & Source Insight. I am a hobbyist developer and a
professional software test engineer currently specializing in web app
security.
After I managed to get it installed my first impression was "WOW! This
is cool.".
Installation:
Installation was fairly straight forward with lots of
information. I did hit a few rough spots. I did not install the Zend
Server the first time around simply because I did not understand that it
was required for debugging. When I went back to install the Zend Server
I had to reinstall the entire app on the local machine. The installer
failed to recognize what was already installed and just build on the
existing installation. Don't know about anyone else, but I do not cut
code on my web server.
Next problem came with installing the docs. I kept getting a
weird access denied error even though I am a member of the
Administrators group. Everything seemed fine so I let it run its
course. Nothing seemed to explode or die.
The IDE did seem crowded so I just closed a few windows.
Likes:
Installer detected the correct Apache & PHP versions during
install. Even backed up my httpd.conf and php.ini files on the fly.
The installer asked me if I wanted to change file extension
associations.
The parenthesis & quote highlighting.
Built-in Function reference for standard and included classes.
The integration of ftp access so I can access my web server.
Debugging was straight forward. Very similar to the Visual
Studio debugging. Helped me figure out why I was not parsing an RSS
feed correctly.
Auto-completion.
Shallow learning curve.
Also does HTML.
Dislikes:
Having to install another server on the local machine to debug.
Can only debug files on the local machine. Couldn't figure out
how to debug files that reside on the web server.
If this is possible how do I install this over a SSH
remote session (i.e. no GUI)?
How do I get the two (IDE on client, Zend Server on web
server) to work together?
What are the security implications of having the Zend
Server on a web server?
Having to constantly reconnect via FTP to access a file on the
web server. More of a nuisance but could be more transparent.
The installer made me reinstall the entire app just to add on
functionality.
If you are in the market for a professional grade PHP IDE Zend Studio is
worth every penny. I would buy it if I had the cash.
