why is mail() so slow ?!

I'm using php 4.3.0, apache 1.3.27 on debian woody
MTA is exim set up with the default woody configuration
When i send a mail using the php mail() function the page where the
function
is called takes 10/15 seconds to load
I'm not doing massive mail just sending one mail to one recipient
How come is the mail() function so slow ??
