I've seen some very long select lists, but I don't think in the thousands (100's yes). I think most browsers used the OS to display form elements, so you would be hitting limits of the OS. I think it could handle it, but you are exceeding the design limits of that interface option. Not to mention how long it would take to transfer all that info over a network connection, especially a modem connection. The "smarter" way to do it would be to use a search option to load matches and/or to step through alphabetically. This could be done through a combo of javascript and a popup window that updates the main window. That's how I would implement it, that way there are no design limitations. Dear list, i m thinking about an edit mask for customer entries so that the changes can made from normal ppl. Its obvious that it would be smart to allow the user only to pick values which really exist, means I give him a <SELECT> + <OPTION> so he can only choose valid data ... The problem is that I expect the <SELECT> to grow giant coz there r a few thousand entries! ... which leads to following questions .... 1: how much data can a browser (mozilla) handle in one HTML/Formular/<SELECT>? 2: is there a smarter way than one monster select? -- Brent Baisley Systems Architect Landover Associates, Inc.
