I think you exlained the whole point of XML very well.
Like SQL and RDBMS, XML provides a higher level framework for dealing
with data and documents. Also like SQL, XML is popular also just because
it is popular. The more people who support it, the more useful it is.

Well yes. Storing data is not a problem. It's being able to do things to
it that is the real trick.
