I've recently run into a similar problem. I need to post data to a secure
server with a username and password (ie.
https://username:password@server/file.cgi).
The only way I found to do this, so far, is to run curl in exec(). This
method sucks since I'm sending a username and a password. Anyone smart
enough to use top or ps can see the login information. Another way to do it
would be to compile php with libcurl support. (libcurl would need to have
ssl support). I've had terible expereinces trying to compile php4 with curl
with ssl support. It just wont happen. I may post an overview of my problems
to this list when I get a few minutes to write it all down -- and pray for
someone who's gone through it to help me.
Thomas,
Check out these sites for info on curl and how it works:

Overview of how libcurl works (if
you manage to compile it).
