Hello Mark,

Forget ODBC, when it comes to deal with issues that vary between different
types of databases, ODBC does not save you much work because you still have
to handle the differences in your applications.
Anyway, we all know that it is not true that PHP lacks of standardized
database APIs. What happens is that there are still several packages
attempting to do the same and so there isn't advertising effort to get
these packages known.
Things could have been different if the core PHP developers have made an
effort to unify the existing database abstraction packages instead of
kicking their own.
I am not interested to bring back past discussions on the subject but I
can't help feeling frustrated every time I hear about the wrong perception
that the media and many users still have about the apparent lack of
standardized database API.
Anyway, for those that still don't know, if you need a mature and standardized
database abstraction package used by thousands of PHP programmers for a
long time, you may want to look at Metabase:
