OK, here is the wierd path - hardcoding the full path only works when I
upload the files to the apache 'live' server. But on my development server
(PHP4, win98, PWS), I get the problems I mentioned earlier, the images in
the .inc files don't link properly when included in other .php files?

In this case, you may have to hard code the entire path:
include('/your/path/to/the/file.inc');
