One slight side note: because I have to spend a lot of time moving
around, I've found that I can quite happily run a fully decked out
single-machine development server on my notebook, with IBM DB2,
Apache, PHP3/4, Java, yada yada. I also have my home dir NFS-mounted
on it, and X/GNOME/XEmacs etc etc--which usually isn't running.
The upshot is that when I need to hit the road, I just unplug the
network cable. When I get on the ferry (1.5 hours to Vancouver :) I
just fire up X (mostly for Netscape) on the notebook and keep on going
like nothing happened. When I get home, I plug it back into the
network and it sits in a secluded corner, while I work on it via a
much more comfortable desktop workstation, which can then be running
pretty much anything as long as it has a good editor and terminal
program, and can mount SMB shares.
YMMV, but this sorta thing is just _too_ easy with *nix (well, Linux
anyway; I can't see *BSD being any tougher. :)
