Jeremy, Thanks - that's good advice, i've been thinking of getting another
machine. I really want to learn more open source stuff - as it is, i'm
running PHP and mySQL on win98 - what I wish is that I could have all the
programs I need on my laptop - coding, database, and graphics - so I can be
mobile - ian

Ian, here's a bit of encentive.
For the price of Photoshop and Flash, you could buy another cheap PC.
So, instead of upgrading Photoshop and Flash the next time they have
the latest greatest version, think of maybe spending that on a second
PC.
On this PC you could run Linux. That is what I do -- well, not
really. I always have a windows box around for just those things
(gotta check out what the web sites I build look like in MSIE, etc) --
but for me, windows makes me such an in-efficient programmer. It is
just hard to get around well without a mouse (well, that's not
neccesarily true). Actually, what helps me be terribly efficient at
coding is the X windows system running KDE 1.1 with a lot of stock
xterms and VIM (oh yea, and sloppy focus!!!! this keeps the mouse
clicking to an absolute minimum). KDE 2 seems to have
inherited many of the dislikes about MS windows -- so I don't use it.
Yea, yea.. So I am plugging KDE, X, VIM and Linux on the PHP list.
But, you'll all be happy to know that the main thing that I do on this
platform of choice is write PHP code all day/night/etc.
