You're right, XML needs more space than plain data and it's not usefull to
store whole databases in XML files. But if you need to exchange datas
between several applications then will XML be the right choice.
And your second point about something that will possible not be solveable
with simple tables, well you can solve everything with tables,but how ugly
will be such datas, solved in Databases:
<tree>
<child>
<child>
<child>
<child>data</child>
</child>
</child>
</child>
</tree>
okay, this a very simple part, but it should shown that SQL servers are not
build to store object oriented datas. And the future will bring more OO
datas. Btw word processing documents and HTML files are also OO oriented.
Try to store these in databases (not the whole file in one BLOB!!)

Forget about XML... it sucks...
right now i can't imagine one Projekt on this earth that would need XML.
don't ever think about replacing your database with XML-Files.
one thing that XML clains to be perfect in is in exchanging data files...
what's wrong with a SQL-Dump or a textfile which structure you know? (
basically
that is what XML is all about)..

p.s: if i'm wrong please someone point me to a projekt that was done in XML
and could
not be done significantly faster with a Database......
