I think Java is good for non-web applications but I absolutely HATE it on
the web. It's incredibly slow. I'd suggest ASP over Servlets/JSP. I've
written ASP hitting an Access DB that's faster than JSP or servlets hitting
MySQL, Postgres, MSSQL, or Oracle. Not to mention it's a pain to write.
For web applications, PHP is definetely the way to go if you have a choice
in the matter.
