If that's the case, your server is horribly misconfigured. The last time I was experimenting
with
servlets (~18 months ago), I had no trouble hitting the low double-digit hit/second rates on a
servlet that did multiple DB/2 queries. The benchmark tool, web server, servlet runner *and* DB/2
were all running a not-particularly-tuned 80MB Pentium 133.
With recent JVMs, Java can be more than acceptable. It's probably not going to be quite as fast
as
mod_perl or PHP but it's still going to easily reach the point where tuning your application
gives
several orders of magnitude higher performance benefits than any changes to the server architecture.
Ditto things like Access, which will be fine for single user usage but will roll over and die a
messy death with multiple users.
