There's an option to index by file system in htdig, but the files had to end in .htm or .html
if I remember right for the option to take effect. I patched the htdig code to allow different file
extensions. It takes about an hour to index 190 Mb (about 100K files) using htdig via the file
system. It was taking an interminable time via the http server (along with making my logs well-nigh
unusable).
I do like htdig's automatic "ending modification" ('s/'ing/'ed/, etc.)
for the search. I really liked freeWAIS and sfWAIS along with structured documents, but they were
getting too hard to compile 64-bit clean and too many bugs in the structured document code.
