Andrew,
Where can I get more information on Virtuoso?
Thanks!

Andy,
We are releasing an open source (GPL) tool called GTKBench, that will
allow
live 'horse-racing' of any combo of databases and drivers, simulating
TPC-A
and TPC-C tests. This allows folks to compare real results in their
environment, instead of relying on published benchmarks and speed claims
of
database and driver vendors, and to do so withougt spending the millions
required to replicated the envrionments used by the big vendors for the
published tests. I think it much more valuable to see comparisons on
the
hardware you will actually be using. Plus, GTKBench's source is open so
you
can peek at it to satisfy yourself that it's honest, and to extend it
for
use in any way necessary (e.g. add TPC-H for instance, before we get to
it
:).
The GTKBench tool also allows multithreading tests (for scalability
testing)
and provides for tests with different SQL approaches, e.g the
differences
between exec/direct, prepare/execute, and stored procedures (perhaps web
application developers will actually start to use efficient SQL instead
of
costly exec/directs all the time).
I've run this tool with all of our competitors drivers, and many
databases.
So far Virtuoso outperforms any other db by a factor of 120% to 2000% ,
depending on database, which test, etc. I've not peformed the type of
test
you are planning, which I assume is to run a set of PHP pages against
different databases and measure results, but I would expect no less of a
'win' on Virtuoso's part.
Granted, Virtuoso isn't 'free software' and it's not GPL, so it has a
strike
against it in this community, but it's got more functionality than MySQL
or
Postgres, (e.g. virtual database, live sql-to-xml transformation,
webserver,
mailserver, SOAP server, WebDav server, XSLT engine, etc.) and runs on
at
least as many platforms. It is significantly cheaper than most of the
'commercial' databases, and starts off free with a 3-connection license.
I
encourage people to try it out, and I pledge Openlink's and my own
dedication to ensuring satisfaction on with both performance and
functionality.
In short, you are right. A lot of people would like to disagree with me.
I encourage them to try, not with theoretical statements but in
practical
comparisons. Rest assured that we are extending huge efforts to be the
fastest, most robust, and most functional database and integration
server on
the planet.
Respectfully,
Andrew

Andrew,
That's a bold statement you made there, and I'm sure that a lot of
people
would like to disagree with you. I recently saw a statement made by a
MySQL
developer stating that MySQL is one of the fastest SQL Databases in the
world. If you do know of a faster one then I'm sure that we would all
love
to see what it can do.
I am attempting to prove many differences between certain web
applications
running on either Unix based platforms or Windows NT based platforms.
Comparing cost of ownership, reliability and performance. The tests will
involve standard software installations running on exactly the same
hardware. I will be testing low specification machines as well as high
performance machines.
Initially I will be comparing MS-SQL & ASP against MySQL & PHP. I intend
to
test Postgres SQL and will of course test the software contained in
www.openlinksw.com/virtuoso as soon as I can connect to their web site.
Regards
Andy Woolley.
