I understand this. I was talking about the gtk::library_version() function that you proposed. But yes, I'm against the idea of overriding found version.

Deciding on a version and/or allowing a configure switch change to override the default version found is something configure.js and ./configure would need to handle. I have patches for the windows build system that allow the user to override the found library version, but that can easily be taken out if you don't think it's a good idea.
