My working environment is my linux server. There everything is already up
and running.
While many do like to 'play' with the gadgets, the increasing popularity of
XP as the home platform
for 'minor' developement and just for the kid down the block, would suggest
that even a simple
batch file would help newbies to enter the world of programming.
I know of few kids who are eager to learn PHP, but need their hands held for
the install process.
Now,.. the install process for the basic user of XP OS is really simple to
do, but still requires the
user to read more instructions than there is actual work.
I wish they (CVS guru's) just create a complete set of basic PHP setups made
for Apache on XP
with default settings, and thereby remove this annoying problem. Once the
user is at least able
to do a "Hello World" ,.. then he is always able to modify the config/ini
files. My take on that is that
most XP users (especially the newbies) will not seek to do any compilation
and would only
need to add more dlls as loaded modules.
It would be easier for them (newbies.. myself included), to ask specific
questions on how to tweak,
add functionality/modules, once the system is already running.
And last, since the instructions in the added files are "if you are using..
then do...." why not just
do it instead of explaining it over and over again to people like me?
Just my Other 2 cents.
-Alon.
