set short_open_tags to off in any sample php.ini we ship.
    Ah yes, that reminds me:
    17. Nuke every "alternative" open tag and only have <?php
Agreed (though not so much nuke as default to off).

Whenever open tags comes up, I'll toss <script language="php"> into the conversation and get nothing but doubtful stares. Is this used *anywhere* except academic examples? -Sara
