IIRC, the original intent of the question was to find a PHP
implementation in case no extension is available - but wasn´t there a
new package recently that can take a string with C sourcecode, compile
that as an extension on-the-fly (an cache it) and then you could use
that extension in your PHP source?
Wouldn´t that be a faster implementation (at least from the second run
onwards)? At least it wouldn´t require going through the sources and
convert into (slower) PHP.
Just an idea, don´t know how feasible this is.
