It was the main barrier for me too to start writing the docs. Then one day with enough sparetime I just decided "i have to figure out how to make this work". Must say it was one of the most confusing things I have done for a while. I am working on Solaris will be writing a small howto on how to make the build enviroment. I'm working on FreeBSD, and it took not so much time to install all the needed things (cd /usr/ports/xxx && make && make install), but however a HowTo would be great, because sometimes certain versions of the different tools are needed. There is no "test" place, but all the document writers usually have their own build enviroment for docbook on which they test the documentation before committing it to cvs.Maybe that´s why there are so few people who drite docbook docs... only those who write docbook have a test environment, those who don´t have a test environment don´t write docbook, because they have no place to test ;-)
