Actually, on further inspection, I realised I didn't HAVE an old one to backup! I completely deleted my c:\php4 folder before unpacking the new snapshot!
I've renamed pear.bat_old to pear.bat and it works!
Seems you do the backup procedure after creating pear.bat - which is obviously giving the wrong result.
