We have made some big mistakes concerning template engines in the past. When the rush began, we missed the chance to come down to a common API for all engines and we didn't really object when people introduced new engines with different APIs. Over the time we have learned from this and we have realized that it isn't a good thing to have a bunch of packages all doing essentially the same. Because of that there are in fact a number of template packages but at the same time we try to keep the mess as small as possible by not adding more. I hope this clarifies the reasons for our "negative" attitude towards template engines a bit.Not a negative attitude at all, it's a very realistic one. You're doing "damage control" at this point and that's the right thing to do. Like I said at the outset, I had little hope of Dummy getting into PEAR, but you know how it is -- one has to try. ;-) Let us call this the end of it, then -- I hereby retract my proposal for HTML_Template_Dummy. Martin, can we hear you say with authority that "no new template engines" is the official PEAR policy? It'd be nice to see it posted to the list exactly that way (if you have not already, sorry if you have). This would help to dissuade persons like myself who think there may be a chance, when in fact there is no chance. (Not being bitter, I just want to make sure nobody's time is wasted in the future -- certainly I didn't expect to generate this much traffic on the list, and everybody has heard the same arguments at least three times before.) I'll put out HTML_Template_Dummy (or maybe just "Dummy" now ;-) as a separate PEAR-compliant but not PEAR-accepted class, if that's OK with the PEAR leads. (Any chance of getting dummy.php.net while I'm at it? ;-)
Smarty addictedAha! Your true reasons are revealed! (Just kidding. :-) Hope everyone has a good rest-of-the-weekend. _______________________________________________________________________ Paul M.
