I have been playing about with an alsa extension on and off. I have a
native alsa version that can play midi notes and change channels etc.
It is very messy though and isn't likely to go much further.
I have also been playing with the tse3 library and wrapping that as a
pecl extension which is much more promising and much more powerful,
however it is GPL which is a problem. I haven't yet spoken with the
author about releasing an LPGL version but if there is any interest and
I get time to do any more work on this I may approach him.
