I think, unlike the PEAR::DB, this won't be a high traffic codebase. For
instance my PEAR::DB instances run ~15 to ~20 queries a page, while you're
only going to run PEAR::Payment::Whatever once a page on a low traffic
page or offline via cron.
So I wouldn't take huge pains to totally avoid bloat.
