My hope is to get concrete reasoning behind this. On PEAR's own site it says "PEAR is a framework and distribution system for reusable PHP components". That's exactly what this MVC implementation provides, a framework to develop reusable PHP components.
Its a framework for reuseable components. Not a place for frameworks. See the difference? Our framework consists of the installer, pearweb, pear error handling etc .. this all forms the basis for the packages.
Also, this package *is* simply a library and best yet it is meant to leverage a lot of what is in PEAR already. Whether or not other PEAR packages are used is completely up to the developers. I guess a question I would have is what is the negative impact of this in PEAR.
no, its not a libary. it is actually the glue that turns the packages into a framework. the negative impact is that it will sidetrack us and will dilute our focus. if your system really becomes as flexible as you hope it needs to define alot of standards and/or abstraction layers. if it is not as flexible it will result in confusion (why does this package work but this doesnt). remember that while we dont allow redundant packages we do allow packages that follow a different approach. also our user base are people who develop frameworks. while alot of them might be happy to move to a third party framework it is still a bit wierd to sort of cut out the middle man here. anyways its really important that a project doesnt overload itself and I feel that this would overload PEAR.
Before a final decision is made I'd like some in the Group to at least try the package so they might have a more concrete view of what it can do. I realize that may not be feasible however it may give better insight...insight that may still leave you and the same conclusion but at least it would be a more informed decision.
I am sure people will have a look and maybe some people will join you in your efforts. Anyways one minor yet important thing: Dont use the term "group" this way. Since there is a "pear group" it makes it sounds like you are asking them. However you actually wanted to address the "pear community". I just want to make this clear as you are not the only one that uses this choice of words which has already been the source of them confusion. regards, Lukas Smith smith@backendmedia.com _______________________________ BackendMedia www.backendmedia.com berlin@backendmedia.com Linn Zwoch Smith GbR Pariser Str. 44 D-10707 Berlin Tel +49 30 83 22 50 00 Fax +49 30 83 22 50 07
