The catch-22 here is is that PHP5 adoption in some shops will be determined by PEAR package availability. I completely agree with trying to roll this out for PHP4 (and am excited by the possibility), but I do think that very shortly after it should be implemented in PHP5 (without waiting on PHP5 adoption). Luckily PHP5 isn't 'stable' yet.
I seem to be the only one from the "unification project" (I guess that's what it is?) that's talking right now, not trying to speak for Greg, Philippe, Alan, et al. Having said that :-) my preference is to get a working implementation up and tested in PHP4 (with foreknowledge of PHP5) so that it can be tested sort-of widely. As Lukas says, it'll be a year before PHP5 is in general adoption -- so to me, a PHP4 version will help more in the short run, and let us test it better for the long run. -- Paul M.
