Yeah, there are a number of views about that; you're talking about the "declarative" approach, whereas others prefer the "imperative" line. Harry Fuecks and the WACT guys have done a nice analysis here:

Not exactly. Actually I was referring to the implementation... The template could be a file name, an object, a string template... and the template engine would be the piece of code that read the template and do whatever is needed to get the content out of it, i.e. do an include, parse/replace, call a method on it... -Philippe
