On IRC we talked a bit about the LinuxTag flyer. I had several ideas that I wanted to put forward, as well as some questions. Primary Question being: Who are we targetting this at? The Answers that first came to me were: "PHP developers who are not using PEAR", "Programmers of other scripting languages who do are not familiar with the wealth of code contained in PEAR" and "Companies who are looking for stable packages on which to build software". If you have any other targets please respond. Second Question: What is the best way to reach our target audience (how do we not end up in the trash). My Answer: Make it not only informative but also USEFUL! My Proposal: Instead of making the flyer only have one side dedicated to PEAR, and one side dedicated to PECL which is much smaller, make it focusing more on PEAR but at the same time covering the highlights of PECL. I propose that one side be focused at the casual/corperate reader. This side will read like an advertisement. It will BRIEFLY outline the PEAR/PECL project objectives/accomplishments, as well as giving some stats and information. The "back" side, could be like a reference card with information that would be useful for a programmer who wants to use PEAR/PECL. This would be something that you would want to KEEP! I'm sure that amongst us we can come up with more then enough content, but time is ticking very fast, so we will need to get something together if we want to have it printed and ready by the beginning of the conference. Please respond with comments. These are just MY ideas, please feel free to add yours :) Aaron Lukas Smith wrote:
Hi, PHP and more specifically PEAR and PECL will be well represented in the LAMP area at the LinuxTag in Karlsruhe in a few weeks. The question now is if we want to create a flyer for that event. Maybe this can even become a generic flyer we can update every year. The question is also if we want to have a join flyer with PECL or not. This is why I also included pecl-dev in my mail. I hope you guys can cope with the pear-dev traffic you will get this way :-) I hate paper flyers as they just end up in the trash too easily with all the other crap people collect and never read. While chatting with Georg Richter about this today he suggested a postcard format. I dont know how much it would be but I think that might be the ideal format. It would force us to a fairly compact message though :-) I could see something like: PEAR Logo 2-3 sentences about pear website link (summary of) all categories download statistics All of this would be done in the pear colors. The flip side could contain the same for PECL just in their colors. I think this flyer would really stand out. I currently have no idea on pricing or timeframe. So I dont know how far the 144 Euros will get us and even if we feel its a worthwhile cause (for simplicitlies sake I would say the current funds are at the disgression of the group since it was the group who earned it, once (if) we start getting funds through multiple sources we should formalize things a bit more). But since there are people from all over the place coming to LinuxTag we could maybe print a ton of flyers extra (with a lifetime until the first conferences next year) and everybody could take some home, who plans to attent any of the other conferences this year. BTW: PECL is still missing a text for the lamp area homepage. regards, Lukas Smith smith@backendmedia.com _______________________________ BackendMedia www.backendmedia.com berlin@backendmedia.com Linn Zwoch Smith GbR Pariser Str. 44 D-10707 Berlin Tel +49 30 83 22 50 00 Fax +49 30 83 22 50 07
