real functions. This is PHP_Compat, not PHP_Incompat.

I don't know how this would be useful; I don't think that recent versions of
PEAR can even be installed on PHP 4.0.0.
Though if you have some sort of bootstrapping process worked out, I wouldn't
mind hearing it.
