I was hacking away at the Compiler backend for Template the other day, and it became clear that there is alot more work in refactoring the Flexy code (let alone looking at the Block Backend) Considering this may take many months before it delivers anything more than what Savant currently is, what are your thoughts on making Template a PHP5 only package?. eg. a) Throws PEAR_Exception, on anything that could cause the using application problems. b) use extra arguments for warnings ?? - until a lightweight warning mechansim can be worked out..an idea occurs to me that I first heard from Harry Fuecks (I think) that is practical in php5 - serialize the object, and use it as the error message for trigger_error. The 1024 byte limit for the message is lifted in php5.
c) use all the protected / private etc. d) Type HintsI think that's a fantastic idea. There are plenty of highly successful php4-only templates that satisfy the needs of many users, so it's not like a big gap will be left. Greg
