That's good, news. I may have misunderstood the stand of the PEAR group on this ;-)
Since Template could be working with PHP4, let's stick it with that for now. On the other hand, I'm all for embracing PHP5 as soon as possible...
Umh Philippe I might be wrong but you can't "stick with PHP 4" and "embrace PHP 5" at the same time.
Agreed. What I meant was, if we can let's start with PHP4, but let's switch to PHP5 ASAP when it seems to make sense...
eg. a) Throws PEAR_Exception, on anything that could cause the using application problems.
I think we could leave it up to PEAR_ErrorStack to throw the exception under PHP 5 and eventually return a PEAR_Error on PHP4, although, it would be best to clear away from PEAR_Error and simply return TRUE/FALSE and use PEAR_ErrorStack... I'd like to minimize the use of Exceptions for error handling.
I respect your point but there is already a PEAR_Exception experimental class (thanks Cox) and the right way in PHP 5 is to properly use the Exceptions so I don't think that again we can tell people to use PEAR_ErrorStack in lieu of exceptions.
I'm still learning ErrorStack, but I thought it could throw the exception for you, allowing you to keep PHP4 -> PHP5 modifications to a minimum, as far as error/exceptions are concerned... But I have to say to learning curve is a bit steeper than with PEAR_Error, however more limited it was...
and they will have no reason to switch if we do the stick with PHP 4. I wouldn't write a package in PHP 4 and then porting it to PHP 5 but of course is Alan's choice ;)
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for PHP5. Back when I proposed the Template API, it was written with "interface" ;-) But this is PEAR which has a wide audience of different users with different needs... Ok, we can't cater to everybody's needs, but PHP5 will take a while to be adopted by web hosting companies, unless they all offer PHP4 vs. PHP5 choice, which would be wonderful. This is not small market. Anyway, I'm not reluctant at all to have Template be a PHP5 package only. I am more to see how far we can go with PHP4, and if we need PHP5 than let's switch. It would be an even better proof of advancement of PHP and a better incitive for people to switch to PHP5. Rather than "yeah, we could have done it with PHP4, but we didn't want to..." -Philippe
