http://wiki.ciaweb.net/yawiki/?area=PEAR_Dev&page=RfcExceptionUse The subject of Exceptions has been causing quite a lot of stir here on pear-dev. Hans Lellid, yesterday, setup a Wiki page to try and gather all points being launched in the mailing list.
Yes, big thanks to Paul for giving us that wiki space. I like the 15 minute lock. It's burned me once last night, but it's my own damn fault for spending more than 15 mins at a time -- plus the stuff Sergio added was better than what I had added :) An interesting feature might be to choose your lock time (w/ a max of 30 minutes, maybe) when you edit.
The document has most of the infrastructural work done. Now it needs arguments to get written there, in the second section "Exceptions advantages and pitfalls". I ask everyone who has shown an opinion on the subject here in the list, to go to the wiki and thoughtfully layout his opinion.
Yes, I would also strongly suggest providing examples. I'm working to try to think of some good, concise examples. It would be ideal to find some examples from real-world PHP/PEAR apps, so that's what I'll be doing this evening. Examples will help keep the hypothetical stuff in check and will make it all the clearer to those who have not used exceptions in real-world applications. Hans
