People should know about [PackageName]-[state]. I put this in the FAQ not too long ago. preferred_state is absolutely necessary for upgrade-all.
I also think it doesn't make much sense to do pear install myapackage-beta. I don't want to have to do that. It adds unnecessary complications. Arnaud.
