$ pear config-set preferred_state alpha $ pear install mypackage this is always available. appending the postfix is only needed if you want a specific state or version. What complications are there? If you want only stable packages, the installer will prevent you from installing non-stable packages. Packages are always marked as lower than stable for a reason, and that reason is that they are not stable and can't be depended on yet :) GregPeople should know about [PackageName]-[state]. I put this in the FAQ not too long ago. preferred_state is absolutely necessary for upgrade-all.I also think it doesn't make much sense to do pear install myapackage-beta. I don't want to have to do that. It adds unnecessary complications.
