Very true, however there are methods to get around this. A good example is the MDB2/Iterator.php file, containing the MDB2_Iterator and MDB2_BufferedIterator. It serves as an adapter of the MDB2_Result class to the Iterator interface.
Some conditional file includes based on version number or, better yet, an MDB2 option could be setup to allow choosing PEAR_Error or Exceptions errors could possibly work.
Of course, this is all highly speculative and Lukas has already stated he's not currently interested in implementing the feature.
