Very true, however there are methods to get around this. A good example is the MDB2/Iterator.php file, containing the MDB2_Iterator and MDB2_BufferedIterator. It serves as an adapter of the MDB2_Result class to the Iterator interface. Some conditional file includes based on version number or, better yet, an MDB2 option could be setup to allow choosing PEAR_Error or Exceptions errors could possibly work. Of course, this is all highly speculative and Lukas has already stated he's not currently interested in implementing the feature.
Yes. MDB2 is increadibly extensible. You can define custom classes for alot of things. You can dynamically extend MDB2 using modules that can be transparently accessed with __call(). And once you are in the PHP5 world you can easily wrap anything. However the question is if the overhead is really worth it. However I am sure that sooner or later someone will step up and create a PDO based exceptions happy DBAL in PEAR. I discussed this with Daniel in Frankfurt last fall and the idea was to focus on MDB2 in 2005 and look for a PHP5 only DBAL for 2006. However so far there really hasnt been a shift towards MDB2 and this was all totaly hypothetical anyways, as always with roadmaps in open source. regards, Lukas
