Mighty arrogant of you there to ASSUME its *half-baked*
Just beside its "new technology" doesn't mean someone knows know how to use
it and is using it properly. How do you know how much time Luca has put into
this? Actually the technology has been around a very long time as you
probably know.
I say lets put in in Pear now and BAKE it.

AJAX is a pretty wide open field in the php world right now, we don't need a
half baked implementation in pear. Once your class has been used for awhile
and get the kinks worked out we can think about adding it to PEAR.
