I feel the same way since I don't like pear going cpan way. I'd rather see
pear as "php standard class library" that is always installed with php so
that we can rely that it's there. The alternative is a lot of hassle when
you need to install a piece of code that uses several pear classes which
IMHO lessens pear's value.
My code uses Log class for example, so I need to go one extra step in
installation procedure if I want to upgrade to php version greater than 4.1.
I also hear repeated reference to the "decision" to move all pear classes
away from the php distribution. My memory recalls another decision to split
pear into "core" part which should remain in php distribution and "extended"
part which should be placed elsewhere.
